Square includes invoicing in every plan, so the plan you pay for is about processing fees and a few invoice features, not the invoices themselves. Square Free costs nothing a month and sends invoices, recurring invoices, estimates, and contracts. Square Plus, at $49 a month per location, lowers the card rate, caps bank-transfer fees, and adds payment schedules and your own templates; Square Premium is $149 a month per location. Square is invoicing and payments, not bookkeeping, and it makes the most sense if you already take cards in person with it.

Which plan should a one to five person business pick?

Look at how your customers pay and how big your invoices are.

  • Small invoices, a few a month, mostly paid by card: Square Free. At low volume, its higher card rate costs you less than Plus’s subscription would.
  • Larger invoices, many of them, or customers who pay by bank transfer: Square Plus at $49 a month per location. The lower card rate and the cap on bank-transfer fees add up quickly on bigger invoices, and payment schedules let you take a deposit and the balance on one invoice.
  • You need phone support at any hour: Square Premium at $149 a month per location. Its online card rate is the same as Plus’s, so on invoices alone the extra is for support and the lowest in-person rate.

Say you make jewelry with a partner. You sell at weekend markets, taking cards in person, and you invoice about ten boutiques a month for wholesale orders of about $600 each, which they pay by card online.

On Square Free those ten invoices cost $201 a month in card fees; on Square Plus, $177 a month. The saving is well short of Plus’s $49 a month per location, and at this invoice size, paid by card online, Plus only pays on invoice fees at the volume in the takeaways. Stay on Square Free, and ask your bigger boutiques to pay by bank transfer instead. Move to Plus when you want deposits through payment schedules, or when wholesale orders grow large enough that the bank-transfer cap starts to matter.

What moves you up a plan?

Fees and features. On fees, the trigger is volume times invoice size: the bigger your invoices and the more of them, the sooner the lower rate on Plus covers its price. On features, it’s the first time you want a deposit and a balance on one invoice, or your own invoice design.

Worked example

At your numbers, Square Free is the smallest bill: $201 a month in fees. Square Plus saves $24 in fees against its price of $49 a month per location, so it doesn’t cover its price on fees alone. Paid by card online, Plus covers its price on fees from 21 invoices a month of $600.

Square Free, Square Plus, and Square Premium for one location, per month. 10 invoices a month averaging $600 ($6,000 in all), all paid by card online. Fees at Square’s published US rates for standard domestic cards, plus each plan’s monthly price (Square Plus and Square Premium are priced per location). Card payments typed in by hand or charged to a card on file cost more on every plan and aren’t included. Checked October 15, 2026.

Square’s help center says bank transfers (ACH) deposited into Square Checking carry no fee, on every plan. The Square bank-transfer figures here are for money paid out to another bank account; into Square Checking, Square charges no fee for them.

Below your own break-even, buy Square Plus for its features, such as payment schedules and custom invoice templates, or not at all.

Skip Square Invoices if

  • You don’t take cards in person and don’t plan to. Then Square is an invoicing tool with a higher card rate on its free plan. When free invoicing is enough compares the free options.
  • You want your books in the same tool. Square doesn’t do bookkeeping. Accounting software or an invoicing tool helps you decide whether you need books yet.
  • You run several locations on a tight budget. Paid plans are priced per location.

Costs that are easy to miss

  • Processing fees differ by plan and by how the customer pays. An invoice paid online, a card tapped in person, and a card typed in by hand each carry a different rate, and the free plan pays more on the first two.
  • Bank transfers have no cap on Square Free. A bank transfer still costs less than a card, but on Square Free its fee keeps growing with the invoice; on Plus and Premium it stops at the cap.
  • Instant transfers to your bank cost extra. Next-business-day transfers are free.
  • Phone support on Square Free is time-limited. It’s 6am to 6pm PT, Monday to Friday, for the first 90 days.
  • Very high volume gets custom pricing. Above the yearly volume Square states, you can ask about custom processing fees.

What invoicing costs once customers pay by card compares these fees with the other tools at your volume.

Our view

Square Invoices is the obvious choice for a business that already takes cards in person with Square: one account for the counter and the invoices, and nothing extra to pay on Square Free. Our position: start on Square Free, move to Plus when the card fees it would save at your own invoice size and volume cover its price, or you need payment schedules, and keep your books in a tool built for them. What you give up is accounting: Square won’t reconcile your bank or produce a balance sheet, so it’s half of the setup, not all of it. For a business that doesn’t sell in person, it’s rarely the right first pick.

Your next step

Add up last month’s invoices and how customers paid them. If you take cards in person with Square already, start invoicing from Square Free this week. If the card fees Plus would have saved on last month’s invoices come to more than its price (what invoicing costs once customers pay by card works it out at your invoice size), or you want deposits on one invoice, start Square Plus’s 30-day trial and compare the fees at the end of the month.
